Frantic action at Donington shakes up BRDC Formula 4 championship

Sennan Fielding claimed pole position in qualifying and translated that into another win at Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire

One of the most eventful weekends of racing for the BRDC Formula 4 championship, using Yokohama control tyres, saw the top of the series leader board move around for the first time since the opening race weekend and set up a thrilling last round finale in five week\'s time.

A murky Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire was the venue for the first of the three races on Saturday and it was Sennan Fielding who claimed pole position in qualifying and translated that into another win, to follow on from his hat trick last month.

It wasn\'t an easy task though, as series leader George Russell kept the pressure on throughout the race, closing to within 0.8s before Fielding opened the gap to just over one second by the flag. Straun Moore finished in third, having briefly held second but succumbing to Russell\'s pressure while title contender Arjun Maini was fourth.

The second of the weekend\'s three races took place on a brighter but chillier Sunday and saw Charlie Eastwood start from pole, thanks to finishing eighth in Saturday\'s encounter. Eastwood led the field away and behind, Raoul Hyman lost and then regained second place from Diego Menchaca who subsequently lost third to Maini.

On the third lap, Eastwood spun at the Old Hairpin and this promoted Hyman to the lead, with Will Palmer leapfrogging the Maini/Menchaca battle to claim second. By the flag, it was Hyman from Palmer, Menchaca and Maini.

The third and final race of the weekend was perhaps the most eventful of the season so far. Russell was on pole, thanks to the fastest race lap of the weekend with Maini alongside. Maini made the better start but eventually fell back by the end of the first lap. The action began on the second though, with Palmer and Fielding coming together. Fielding dropped to tenth while Palmer retired and picked-up a ten place grid penalty for the next race, as a result.

Hyman then tried a move on Russell at the Old Hairpin and both retired with Hyman also picking up a penalty, although he later appealed the decision.

Maini inherited the lead with Moore second and Menchaca third before Maini lost time and Moore closed right up. Menchaca then passed Moore for second, followed by Eastwood before Moore dropped to 11th behind Fielding. Maini eventually resisted the pressure from Menchaca to claim his fourth win of the season with Jordan Albert taking his first podium of the year.

The results mean that Maini moves to the top of the championship tables with just one race weekend, and three races, to go. There are now six drivers - Maini, Russell, Fielding, Hyman, Moore and Palmer - who can mathematically win the series when it visits the Snetterton circuit in Norfolk in October for the final round.

Commenting, Head of Motorsport at Yokohama HPT Ltd, Mark Evans, said; "This weekend saw some superb action at Donington and demonstrated just how close the series is and how competitive it and the drivers are. To have six drivers in the hunt for the 2014 title, with the £25,000 prize and the test in the GP3 car that go with it after 21 races is testament to the competitiveness of it and its value as a step on the motorsport ladder. I think the final round at Snetterton is going to be one of the most interesting rounds we have seen and I look forward to congratulating one of these six drivers on becoming the 2014 BRDC F4 Champion."
